Juan Lencina is a promoter of three great milongas in Buenos Aires.
Juan is a great Tango dancer. He knows every song and I have never seen him take a step off beat. I have seen lots of marquee name Tango performers that could learn a thing or two from watching Maestro Lencina weave his magic. Juan isn't about money, ego, fame and glory, he is all about loving life in the milongas. His work as a milonga promoter is truly a labor of love.
I was lucky enough to interview Juan and even though my castellano is very weak, I was able to understand some of the key points that he made. Maestro Lencina started dancing when he was twelve years old and has been dancing for over sixty years. He danced with some friends in the neighborhood for about three years before going to his first milonga. He started to promote milongas in the mid 1990s. When he dances he lip syncs the words to almost every song, but he doesn't sing while he's dancing.
When I asked him what advice he would like to give to students of Tango, he said simply to dance to the music and have a pure embrace.
